Lee Taeil, the man that stands around 165 cm to 170 cm. He is my neighbor — well, not exactly my neighbor but I live in apartment Block A while he lives in apartment Block B. The first time I saw him was when he was at his balcony (our balcony are facing each-other). Weird, right?

It was late at night and I heard someone singing. Instead of getting mad at the person who sang, I just listened to him until he finished. He has a really soothing and beautiful voice which is one of the reasons why I am so attracted to him. At that time, he was at the balcony — he doesn’t sing so loud though, but it is enough to make me (I’m certainly not a heavy sleeper) awake.

I have no idea who and why was he singing late at night so I decided to peek through the curtain. It was him, Lee Taeil.

I’ve had always see him as a short man who always come in the morning at the café I work at (which is near our apartment) — but after hearing his voice and the way he sing (which is so beautiful by the way) I started to see him differently.

To be honest, I never come to work on time. But when Jieun (one of the workers in the café) told me that Taeil would usually come early in the morning, on that day onwards — I began to wake up early and always shoo-ed Jieun away just to take his order.

I really find it cute when he would always looked at me and waited for me to finish our “greeting” to the customers that we want to take orders from.

“Hello and good morning. Welcome to our café. May I take your order?” He knew that we would always (it’s a must) to greet our customers first before taking our order. He knew that I knew what he always wanted but instead of saying, “like usual,” or “You know what I always order,” just like our usual customers, he would just wait patiently while looking at me with those big eyes of his.

Then, he would say that he wants Frappuccino and smiled cutely. I feel like I want to strangle him for being too cute.

Although we never had a normal conversation, I started to like him more and more. Jieun noticed this too and said that I should just walk up straight to him and ask for his number. But I feel it would be weird because we’re neighbors.

I also prayed every night and even waited for 11:11, just so that he would talk to me or start a conversation with me.

The day when I talk to him came. It turns out not to be like the way I plan though because it hurts me instead. Unlike usual, he came at the café at night. We were about to close at that time but I insisted and begged Jieun just to stay for a minute just because I wanted to look at his adorable face.

I remember so clearly what happened at that night. I was about to flip the “open” sign to “close” when he appeared in front of the transparent door, panting hard as if he was chased by dogs.

It was unexpected because it was 10 already and there are no other customers. Instead of flipping the sign, I immediately opened the door and let him in. He murmured a thank you and smile. Sounds cheesy but his smile stops my heart for a second.

He sat down at the place he usually sat and waited for me to come over and take his order. I was blushing madly at that time causing me to forget that I was supposed to take his order. He just smiled and waved a finger at me, signaling me to come to him.

I quickly took out my small notebook and also pen and greeted him like usual. That night — he seems different.

Instead of ordering the Frappuccino, he ordered a vanilla latte. I just go with the flow though because I don’t care what he orders as long as he was there. He also smiled a lot as if something absolutely good had just happened. But his smile is the best thing ever.

Jieun made a vanilla latte and she also cursed under her breath for making her stay with me when we supposed to close the shop. I apologized but she just nodded and told me to go make a conversation with him.

I really have no idea what to say that night. I’m pretty sure I would just embarrassed myself just like what always happened when I was still in high school. I could see that he was finish drinking his latte, but he was still staring at the empty cup and smiled like an idiot.

I pretended to sweep the floor while I sneakily at the same time glanced at him. I was very nervous at that time. Jieun wasn’t helping me either; instead she mouthed an “It’s going to be okay” from afar and winked. I began to panicked and search for a very good reason to start a conversation with him.

Usually, he would just pay and walk away after he finished with his drink but at that night, he was still there. Smiling and he was probably in a deep thought too. I knew this is the only chance I could’ve talk to him but my brain was dead at that time.

“Uhm, are you thinking of your girlfriend?” I try to ask in a calm tone but failed because my voice crooked a bit.

He looked up to me, then stared at the empty cup and blushed. “N – No. I don’t have any girlfriend anyway.” He was so cute but seeing him being all shy like, is super cute.

Knowing that he doesn’t have any girlfriend, I was thinking that I probably had the chance to be with him. All of my nervousness goes away and I casually walked up to him and sat in front of him as if we’ve known for a long time.

“Really? How come you don’t have one? But you were smiling as if you’ve got a date,” I said nonchalantly.

He blushed again. Seeing him blushed made me think that he ran all the way from his apartment just to see me. I know it sounds crazy and stupid but I can’t help it — I’m a girl who watches a lot of drama and I always have very high expectations on men.

“N – No! I don’t have a date but it’s just — this person I like…” he muttered shyly. My face fell and I swear my world crashed the moment he said about the person he like. I really had no chance to be with him, I just know it.

I forced a smile, “Who is it? The person must be very lucky then!” If only the person is me… if only, but I know that would never happen. Not in a million years.

“Umm… “He blushed again. “I don’t know how to say this but – “Then he began to tell me the story. He doesn’t want to tell the name though because he was so shy. I have to force to smile while listening when the truth is I just want to jump off the bridge at that time.

My heart aches when he mentioned the person while smiling. I also learned that he is very insecure and not confident about himself — like he feels that he is very ugly that’s why he likes to wear a cap or a scarf just to cover his face. I don’t think he’s ugly at all because I think he is more to adorable than ugly. He also said that he is very afraid to tell the person his true feelings because he’s afraid of getting rejected.

In high school, my friends labeled me as a cupid because I always help my crushes to search for a girlfriend which is stupid and that’s why I promise to myself that I would never give any advices or help my crushes again. But I just broke that promise that night. Like my old self in high school, I began to give him advice and encouraged him to confess to the person he likes.

This is what I hate about myself, giving people advice when I really need to help myself first.

No longer after that he excused himself to go home. He even waved at me (shyly) when he stepped out of the shop, which created butterflies in my tummy. Jieun then ran to me, asking me how it goes and I spilled everything to her. She insisted that I should tell him — who knows he might (try) to like me or something like that.

I couldn’t sleep properly and I lose my appetite easily too. After that night, he came again in the morning like usual. I’m very glad that we become friends and he would always tell me whatever happened related to the person he likes. Alright so what I am trying to say is — we are getting close because of the person he likes. Crazy, huh? But it’s better to be friends than just staring at his face all day which I actually don’t mind.

There’s this one time where I almost flipped the table when he said he almost cried when he saw the person he likes linking arms with his best friend. Well at least it was just linking arms.

Rather than talking with your crush about the person he likes.

I couldn’t stand it anymore, to be honest. I feel like I just want to spill everything to him but I knew that would just hurt me more.

One day, he came earlier than usual and ordered a take away two vanilla lattes. I playfully asked him why he bought two lattes. At that time, he looked like he was in a hurry and also nervous.

He carefully took the vanilla lattes and mumbled shyly, “I – I’m going to give it to y – you know who…”

I frowned. “Oh well, good luck then.”

He must’ve noticed the disappointment in my voice because he stared at me with his confused face first before going out. I turned to the table counter and groaned. Jieun came to me and teased me. Jieun just doesn’t know how to be playful at the right time, making me want to kick her at that time.

“Hey unnie, your love life is going away~”
“Shut up, Jieun.”
“Are you just going to let him go away? At least just tell him you’re interested in him or something.”

I looked up to Jieun and gave her a disbelief look. “Jieun-ah, since when are you getting mature? Don’t tell me what to do.”

“I was just telling you what you should really do! Who knows he might actually accept you and you don’t have to talk about him every second when we’re working.”

I was stuck between wanting to run out of the shop and catch up to him and wanting to punch Jieun in the face because what she was saying is true. Maybe she was right, I thought at that time.

I ran outside the shop and headed to the apartment. Taeil told me that he would always go to the bus stand in front of my apartment every time he had finished his daily routine in our café. I was feeling nervous and happy at the same time — because I thought that day was the day when I’m going to confessed to him right at that instant. But boy, I was wrong.

As soon as I almost reached the bus stand, I was about to shout his name but I stopped because a voice was interrupting me.

“Jiho-yah!” I heard a familiar voice called out.

I immediately stopped right on the spot when I saw Taeil grinning and have the person he likes the vanilla latte. I could see from afar the person bowed and then Taeil linked his arm around the person. Both of them looked so happy together. I assumed Taeil had already confessed. I really don’t know if I should feel happy for him or sad for myself.

After seeing the person he likes, I am very sure that I had no chance to be with him.

Because… the person he likes is a man.
